Hard Work and Determination is Secret to Schobert's Success

Castle Rock, CO

Joe Schobert has had a big year. Earning a starting spot with the Cleveland Browns after his rookie season in 2016, Schobert went on

to lead the entire NFL in tackles and then was subsequently voted to the 2017 Pro Bowl.

This summer, Joe married his High School sweetheart Megan before heading to Colorado to prepare himself physically at altitude for his teams upcoming NFL training camp.

In June, Head Coach Todd Casebier and Joe Schobert connected.  It was at this time, the two agreed that Joe was enthusiastically welcomed to workout at CV's facility.  Not only has Schobert worked out in the CV weight room, Schobert has worked out with Sabercat players, joining them in drills, conditioning and 7v7 work.

"It has been awesome having Joe here", stated Defensive Coordinator Eric Handke.  "The guy jumps in plays practically any position.  Here we have one of the NFL's best players working with our kids to make them better.  And he's a good guy.  He's humble, hard-working and an unbelievable athlete.  He's everything we want our guys to be".

Schobert addressed the entire team after conditioning and just before weight workouts on Thursday, sharing his story.

Growing up in Wisconsin, Schobert was a 4-sport athlete and a standout Football player.  Despite helping his team win a state championship his Senior year, Schobert was not recruited and did not receive any D1 scholarship offers.

The Running Back/Free Safety was finally discovered at an all-star senior game after the the season was over and received an offer to walk-on at the University of Wisconsin.

"I refused to listen to people who said I wasn't big enough or fast enough to play at the next level," stated the Pro-Bowler.  "I just kept believing in myself, working hard and staying out of trouble".

After playing scout team his entire freshmen year, Schobert was voted the "Scout Player of the Year".   Feeling good about his chances to play his 2nd year, Schobert was dealt another blow when the coaching staff changed that year and he went back down to the bottom of the depth chart.

Not discouraged, Schobert continued to work hard and earned a scholarship.  By his Junior year, Joe had become a starter and helped his team beat Auburn in a Bowl.  Despite his teams performance and his individual accolades, Schobert was not being talked about yet as a serious NFL prospect.  Not only this, many speculated that the Wisconsin Defense would suffer greatly after graduating some great players.  As a matter of fact, Joe's Junior year saw the winningest group of Seniors in school history.

Undeterred once again, Schobert went back to work and hit it harder than ever in the off-season.  In his Senior year, Schobert logged 9 sacks in  his first 4 games and led the Badgers to an 11-3 campaign and beat USC in the Holiday Bowl.  The Defense was ranked #1 in scoring and #5 overall.  Schobert had become a legitimate NFL prospect and was eventually taken in the 4th round.

"His presence helped us raise the intensity this week", stated CV Running Back, Jake Hribar.  Hribar also added, "He's just like us.  He is grinding and working to get better everyday."

Senior Cooper Lee acknowledged, "It was pretty cool having an NFL player next to us all week, doing the same things we are dong to get ready for the year."

Schobert emphasized the importance of goals.  "I set a goal to make 100+ tackles this last past season and did it.  This year, I am being very specific with my goals, and that is to help my team win."

When asked about advice he would offer to High School student-athletes, Schobert didn't skip a beat. "Do everything the right way.  When I say everything, I'm not talking just about football.  I'm talking grades, community, time-management and staying out of trouble.  When you do the right things, the right things tend to happen.  I am proof of this."
