After Sluggish Start, CV Moves Into Playoff Position After Huge 3rd Quarter

Castle Rock, CO

The Castle View Sabercats football team (6-3) shook off a slow start to beat rival Rock Canyon (1-8) on Friday night in CV’s final regular season home game.  Rock Canyon drew first blood with an early TD before CV answered midway through the 2nd quarter on a 2 yd TD run by Jordan Jackson.  The game was tied at halftime, 7-7.

Castle View made some excellent halftime adjustments on both offense and defense. After a nice kickoff return by Antonio Ursetta to open the half, the Sabercats avoided disaster after a turnover with some great defense.  CV would take the ball and drive 78 yds, aided by a 65 yd TD strike from Colombi to Wodark, giving the Sabercats their first lead with 8:25 in the 3rd quarter.

The CV Defense came alive forcing a punt on the subsequent series.  Tyler Klopenstein of the Sabercats then blocked the punt and recovered for a touchdown  with about 7 minutes to go in the 3rd.  CV led 21-7 at this point.  The Cats Defense would bend but not break on the next series  as the Jaguars of Rock Canyon would drive all the way down to the CV 6 yd line before the Sabercats would stop RC on a 4th and 1.  Two plays later, Zane Wodark would blow the game wide open for CV with a 94 yd TD run, extending CV’s lead 28-7 late in the 3rd quarter.  In the 4th quarter, CV would control the ball and the clock, preserving the 21 point lead, winning 28-7.

Friday’s win will almost assuredly give CV an entrance into the 2019 5A playoffs for the second consecutive year, while solidifying another winning record. The Sabercats will now fix their sites on Thunder Ridge, eying their 7th win this season and a possible home playoff game.
